Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This is a longitudinal study exploring students' attitudes to speaking before, during and after their study abroad. During the first part of this study, Humphries, Ikeda and Aubrey collected classroom data from students in their classes with support from King and Yashima. We have written a joint publication based on our results, which is now under peer review. I have written a paper as first author that explores students' reasons for speaking and silence (co-authored with Akamatsu, Burns and Tanaka), which is now under peer review. I also presented the results to this paper at JALT 2018 and at Leicester University and Kansas University. I collected interview data from Kansai students during their study abroad at Kansas, Oregon, Queensland, Aston, Warwick and Canterbury. With Yashima, I also collected questionnaire data from students in Taiwan. I also met research collaborator Dr King in August/September 2018. I've written a book chapter about anxiety, which is now under peer review.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
So far, the research is progressing rather smoothly. We have collected a fair amount of data and hope to publish some of it in 2019. Hopefully, the next round of data collection will also go smoothly.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I plan to present at JALT, ETA-ROC (Taiwan) and CamTESOL (Cambodia).
I will interview students about their speaking experiences (after their study abroad).
Hopefully, I can publish two journal articles and one book chapter this year and begin writing two more journal articles.

Causes of Carryover |
One member of the research team (Dr Aubrey) resigned from Kansai University to work in a different country. This disrupted the expenditure in 2018. As a result, roles have changed slightly and we need closer collaboration with our overseas researcher (Dr King) in the UK in 2019. Funds from 2018 will be used for meeting Dr King in 2019.
