Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the first part of this study, we collected classroom data from students in their classes. I analysed interview data from Kansai students during their SA and interviewed students after their SA. With Yashima, I also collected questionnaire and interview data from students in Taiwan about their use of English and Chinese. I published two co-authored book chapters last year (2020) and one single-author book chapter. Yashima and I should publish a book chapter this year (2021) about language use in English and Chinese in Taiwan. Results from our Taiwan study showed that, unlike studies from Europe, our students use of L3 (Chinese) did not lose to Global English. In contrast, the L2 English facilitated the use of L3 Chinese.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to COVID-19, progress has been slightly delayed, but we should finish this year.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We collected longitudinal data from SA students in Taiwan, UK, USA, Australia. Due to COVID delays last year, we focused our data analysis on students from Taiwan. This year, we will complete our book chapter based on language use by these students who studied in Taiwan. Moreover, we will analyse data from students who studied in the English-speaking countries. Data analysis (from interviews, journals, questionnaires and CTS graphs) will take place this spring. Writing and submission to a journal will take place this autumn.

Causes of Carryover |
We need to buy books etc to help us conduct our final analysis and publish our research.
