Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year, I visited Brussels and the UK and interviewed a number of cybersecurity experts, European and Japanese senior bureaucrats, and practitioners involved in protecting the EU, NATO and Japan from cyber attacks. These interviews provided valuable data and a better understanding about the challenges and ongoing initiatives in this field. I also participated in several conferences in Tokyo and in Europe, and organized a workshop on cyber diplomacy at ICU in December 2018. Since early 2019, I am also a collaborator of a major project on EU cyber diplomacy in a Brussels think tank, and another project at ULB in Brussels and the University of Warwick. I published a book and three journal articles in AY2018, three of those are on EU-Japan relations.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The project is progressing quite well. I was able to begin or intensify cooperation with several research groups in Europe and Japan, which is central to the success of this project. Cyber diplomacy as a research area is still relatively new, and I am joining these research efforts at the right time. I presented my initial findings at three conferences and workshops so far, and have received strong support and inquiries for further cooperation, which I will proceed in 2019/2020.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
From September 2019, I will join the University of Warwick as a visiting professor, where I will cooperate with a research group on EU cyber diplomacy. Related to this, I am going to join a research team at the ULB in Brussels.
