Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Because of the COVID-19 epidemic, I was not able to pursue my research in the same way as planned. Several conferences where I wanted to present my findings were canceled. I was able to present my findings at two conferences in April 2021. I was able to conduct some interviews online, and also finished the draft for several publication projects. I policy brief a research paper on "Digital connectivity going global: The case for digital ODA" with the Netherlands Institute of International Relations, and was invited to a roundtable organized by the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI) in Paris. In September 2020, my co-edited book "New Directions in Japan’s Security: Non-U.S. Centric Evolution" (Routledge) was published.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Because of the COVID-19 related lockdown in Europe, I was not able to attend as many conferences and workshop and conducted less interviews than planned. Some interviews were conducted online, and I also presented my work at several online events. For these reasons I am slightly behind my schedule.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I have started collaborating with a group of researchers from about 7 universities in Europe on a project to research and propose policy proposals as well as learning opportunities for cyber diplomats called "CyDiplo: European Cyber Diplomacy". I am the co-editor and author of the "Handbook of Cyber Diplomacy", for which I also writing several chapters. This KAKENHI projects allowed me to lay the theoretical and empirical groundwork for this project. I am currently finishing the draft of several journal articles and book chapters.
