Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During FY 2018, I revised my paper titled “Can Democracy Survive without Free Media?” that is co-authored with Elizabeth A. Stein. This revision involved compiling new data and improving the statistical model, as well as the structure of the paper. I presented versions of this paper at two international academic conferences. I also presented this work at the Waseda-Irvine Conference on Political Economy at the University of California in Irvine, which was hosted by the Jack W. Peltason Center for the Study of Democracy (UC Irvine) and the Center for Positive Political Economy (Waseda).
In FY 2018, I published a short piece titled “Media Freedom Decline in Democracies: Lessons from Latin America” as part of symposium on "Fake News and the Politics of Misinformation" in CP: The Comparative Politics Newsletter, which is published by the Comparative Politics Organized Section of the American Political Science Association.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During FY 2019, I will finish the empirical analysis for my working paper on the dynamics between media freedom and democratic backsliding, co-authored with Elizabeth A. Stein. This is an updated version of the paper which I presented at conferences in 2018. We will submit this paper to a prominent international journal in political science for review during FY 2019. I will also host an international symposium at Waseda University during the Fall of 2019 on democratic accountability and democratic backsliding in comparative perspective.

Causes of Carryover |
I decided to save additional funds for the international symposium that I will host at Waseda University during FY 2019.
