Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In AY 2021, I completed a working paper, "Temporal changes in factor adjustment in the Japanese manufacturing industry" and presented it in two international conferences. This paper investigates changes in dynamic factor adjustment in Japanese manufacturing industry from 1972 to 2012. The study shows that employment and investment adjust fast over the years with intensified international competition and the introduction of IT technology. Also, various policies have helped this process. This study suggests that Japanese manufacturers have become more flexible in hiring workers and faster in making investments. Three previous papers published online first are now published in journals. And I presented my research in two international conferences to disseminate it.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
During the research period FY 2017-2021, I have published five working papers in peer-reviewed journals. Among these, three papers are about dynamic factor adjustment, which is applied to investigate dynamic TFP growth, factor adjustment and industrial policy, and dynamic production structure. I also published a paper about firm heterogeneity and productivity. In FY 2021, I wrote one working paper about temporal changes in dynamic factor adjustment to investigate recent dynamics of factor adjustment for the Japanese manufacturing industry. This is sent to a peer-review journal for possible publication. Considering that I have published five papers in peer-reviewed academic journals and drafted out one working paper so far, my research delivered more outputs than I initially planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In FY 2022, I will try to revise one working paper that I drafted out in FY 2021 in order publish it in an academic journal. This study investigates temporal changes in factor adjustment of the Japanese manufacturing industry by applying a dynamic factor model, which I developed and used in the previous paper. The paper focuses on changes in the adjustment speeds with which factors approach their optimum levels. I will attend international conferences to present the paper to disseminate the paper.

Causes of Carryover |
I set aside some of research fund for publishing fee in 2021, but there was delay in refereeing process. So, I will use that fund for publishing an article or other research purpose related with the JSPS project in FY 2022.
