Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The cultural difference in attribution process, especially the correspondence bias in attitude attribution was examined by an on-line experiment employing both Japanese and American adult participants, Results indicated that both Japanese and American participants showed correspondence bias in typical attitude attribution paradigm, but didn't exhibit the bias when they were reminded of the situational constraints before inferring the writer's attitude. The results of the two samples showed quite similar patterns. It seems that the basic inference process in attitude attribution is universal and similar across cultures. However, the absolute positions of the inferred attitude were different between the two samples. This tendency reflects the actual difference between the average attitudes in the two samples. The lay beliefs and common ideas are considered to be culturally specific.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
