Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The first year was mainly spent doing background research into theories of motivation and developing a questionnaire to measure students’ growth mindset in learning English as a foreign language. It was decided that research into the growth mindset might be an appropriate area to study as there has been very little work done in this area so far. Also, in the first year, effort was expended to give and attend presentations on flipped learning in order to confirm the latest research on this topic. The main findings of the studies related to the growth mindset suggested that Japanese university students appear to believe in the benefits of taking calculated risks, but are still unwilling to put these beliefs into action. Flipped learning may be one way of encouraging growth mindset behavior.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Currently, research is progressing relatively soundly. Through attending various conferences, giving presentations and workshops on computer-assisted language learning (CALL) in addition to meetings with experts in CALL and L2 learning motivation, the researcher has been able to clear direction for the main study to be conducted in the second year of the project Materials for flipped learning classes are currently being created each week and questionnaires have been conducted for the main study. Unfortunately, there are still some issues related to the reliability of the questionnaire of participants’ growth mindsets, which still needs further study in the second and third years of the project.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The researcher plans to continue the study of the effects of flipped learning on the growth mindset of students. The first questionnaire has been conducted. Although the initial plan was to do a comparative study of flipped and traditional classrooms, due to the limited number of students in one group, it was decided to use flipped learning for both groups and conduct a comparison of attitudes towards flipped learning between students with a growth mindset and those with a fixed mindset. The total sample size is approximately 30 university students. Results will be analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative data. Reports on progress in studies being conducted by the researcher will be presented at various conferences during the second and third year of the project.
