Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In the first eleven months of the project we have focused on the following activities:
1. Preparatory activities including a literature review, IR approval, and book contract. We are still in discussions with a publisher (Brill Publishers) regarding the contract and expect to finalize this before the summer.
2. Beginning gathering data. We have undertaken a text analysis of promotional literature and ethnographic fieldwork at Doshisha University and Keio University. In addition we have begun to conduct interviews, as well as engage in participant observation at both institutions, Doshisha and Keio.
3. We are in the process now of assembling and reviewing the data we have gathered so far.
4. As a research team, we have had two extensive research meetings, both in person and over Skype.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

One of our key researchers, Dr. Doerr was not able to conduct research in Japan because of unforeseen circumstances at her home institution. Also, we have had two members of our research team, Dr. Debnar and Dr. Tokunaga, move institutions during the past year which meant that they were not able to contribute as much to the data gathering as we had originally planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Over the next twelve months of the project we plan to focus on the following activities:
1. In addition to further interviews and fieldwork at Doshisha and Keio Universities, we intend to expand our fieldwork activities to two new institutions, Gunma Women’s Prefectural University and Ryukoku University.
2. We will continue to assemble and review the data as well as carry out preliminary analysis.
3. As a research team, we will conduct three more research meetings, both in person and over Skype.
4. We will begin to disseminate our preliminary findings, presenting our research project at the Comparative and International Education Society Meeting in North America.

Causes of Carryover

We were not able to use the full amount of the remuneration allocated for FY2017. We plan to use these monies in FY2018 for the purpose of remuneration when we employ part-time a graduate student to help with data collection.
