Outline of Final Research Achievements |
There are two types of joint in the connection between the skull and neck in tetrapods: mono-articular joint (e.g. reptiles, birds); bi-articular joint (e.g. lissamphibians, mammals). As these differences in joint type are expected to reflect differences in the position and orientation of the range of flexibility in both joint types. The results of this study showed that the bi-articular joint type indicates greater flexibility in the dorsoventral direction, while the mono-articular joint type indicates in the torsion and dorsoventral flexibility. Both joint types share similarity in the restriction of the lateral flexibility. In particular, for the mono-articular joint, it was revealed that although three-axis rotation was expected due to the joints being ball and socket, in fact the rotation was limited to two axes.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
