Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This project aims at the synthesis of unprecedented chiral carbon nanobelt molecule that could be the next generation nanocarbon material, and subsequently investigate their host guest chemistry with fullerenes, templated carbon nanotube growth and other material related applications. The first stage of the project is to synthesize the target molecule. So far, the synthesis was conducted smoothly and the key diborylated intermediate was obtained by a five-step transformation in good yield from commercially available compound. The key transformation, a platinum mediated macrocylization reaction, is currently being examined. To overcome the steric hindrance of the ortho-substituted substrate, we are now screening reaction conditions with different solvent, base and ligand. Also the reaction temperature and time will be optimized. At the same time, using an alternative synthetic approach, a new carbon nanobelt molecule has been successfully synthesized and the structure was unambiguously confirmed by NMR, MALDI-TOF MS and X-ray single crystal analysis. With the new synthetic strategy, we successfully prepared a series of carbon nanobelt molecules and studied their physical properties.
