Outline of Final Research Achievements |
By using Drosophila genetics, we found a neurotransmitter which regulates excitability of a giant neuron in the subesophageal zone and revealed the mechanism of how the neuron controls metabolism to adapt to various temperatures.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
動物は、体内の代謝を調節することで、様々な温度環境に適応している。変温動物である昆虫も、体内の水分量や血糖値を巧みに制御することで、様々な温度環境で生存しているのだが、今回の研究で、そうした制御に関わる神経伝達物質や食道下神経節の神経を同定することができた。実は、類似の神経は、我々の用いたキイロショウジョウバエだけでなく、様々な昆虫に存在する。将来的には、種間でその神経の機能比較を行うことで、昆虫が様々な温度環境に適応してきた過程を解明できる可能性がある。
