Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The detection efficiency (sensitivity) of the WGI for a C-10 point source at the center of field of view (FOV) was obtained to be less than 0.01% from the simulation results. The performance of the system was evaluated by simulation for irradiation of a PMMA phantom with a pencil beam of a C-10 ion beam and feasibility of the WGI system for visualization of C-10 was observed for C-10 irradiation, however; improvement of the noise to signal ratio for the system is necessary. A PMMA phantom was placed at the center of FOV of the system and irradiated with C-10 beam in the carbon therapy facility of the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC). The performance of the system is still under investigation because the analysis of the detected events needs an algorithm.

Reason

The detection efficiency (sensitivity) of the system for a C-10 point source at the center of field of view (FOV) was obtained to be less than 0.01% from the simulation results. The feasibility of the WGI system for visualization of C-10 was observed for a simulated PMMA phantom irradiated with C-10 beam using simulation, however; reduction of the image noise is necessary.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The performance of the system will be evaluated by simulation for irradiation of a PMMA for the available C-10 ion beam. The feasibility of the WGI system for practical visualization of the available C-10 ion beam is under investigation.

Causes of Carryover

I had a plan to buy some items at the end of the last fisical year but because of the delay schedule for the itmes delivering I had to cancel my plan thus I will buy the items this year.
