Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We have identified the effect of aging on lung tissue stem cells. We found that aging reduced number of basal stem cells in the trachea. We have achieved a successful calorie restriction protocol that caused both young and old mice to lose weight. We found that calorie restriction increased the number of basal stem cells in the trachea both in young and old mice. We successfully created a 3D cell culture technique that could mimic the in vivo calorie restriction.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The calorie restriction protocol went successfully so we did not need to repeat it several times to adjust. Samples collected showed clear statistical significance.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will examine the roles played by Sirt and mTOR genes, that are known to be related to calorie management. We will verify their roles in animal samples and in 3D culture system.
