Outline of Final Research Achievements

I evaluated the longitudinal changes of vision related quality of life (VRQoL) in cases underwent glaucoma surgery using the Japanese version of The 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25).
It was found that the NEI VFQ-25 subscale was lowered in only a part of the patients, and many cases did not interfere with daily life. The deterioration of VRQoL was the largest in the cases decreasing the best corrected visual acuity of the better eye after surgery.
To maintain VRQoL, we need to pay attention to prevent postoperative visual loss in operation for better eye.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

緑内障は進行するまで疾患そのものによる影響でVRQoLが低下することは少ないが、治療による副作用や合併症でVRQoLを低下させてしまう可能性がある。しかし薬物療法では、2年前後の経過では副作用によるVRQoLへの影響は少なかった。一方、薬物療法、手術療法いずれの場合にも治療前にVRQoLへ最も影響する因子はBetter eyeの最高矯正視力であり、治療介入後にVRQoLの低下が最も顕著だったのは手術によりBetter eyeの最高矯正視力が低下した症例であった。このことから、特にBetter eyeに対する手術では術後の視機能低下を極力抑えるよう留意する必要があると考えられた。
