Outline of Final Research Achievements

Dementia is one of the main causes of the need for nursing care, and it is considered important in society to prevent dementia. In recent years, it has been reported that there is a relationship between the decline in cognitive function and the decline in masticatory function. Therefore, we conducted a study on elderly people with the aim of clarifying whether stimulation of the oral mucosa is related to cognitive decline. We investigated oral-related items such as the number of teeth and the use of dentures, cognitive function, and the degree of cerebral atrophy in elderly people aged 65 and over with dementia and mild cognitive impairment. As a result, a relationship was found between the number of teeth and the degree of brain atrophy. Therefore, it was suggested that the current number of teeth may be significantly related to the decline in cognitive function.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
