Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
While COVID-19 has made interviews and international travel impossible, the project team maintained regular online research meetings and achieved several important publication milestones. During 2021-2022, the research team has successfully published a chapter in the forthcoming book: COMPLEX DISASTERS: Compounding, Cascading, and Protracted. PALGRAVE MACMILLAN, 2022. Additionally, the project team published an article in the East Asia Forum: Green, D., Whitney, J., and Linley, M. ‘Bolstering Disaster Preparedness among Japan’s Foreign Residents 15 March 2022 and the CI was invited to contribute to the East Asia Forum Quarterly journal in a special issue on Crisis in Japan: Whitney, J. 'A new mantra for Japanese disaster management'Vol.13 No.3 July-September 2021

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
While we have been unable to travel, we have maintained an active publication schedule. Two key outputs, as outlined above are in highly visible publications, and have received multiple retweets and interest from media companies. The online bibliographic database that the team has developed has facilitated our ability to continue collaboration despite the COVID pandemic. This demonstrates the practical value of such a product. The project team is currently considering a further publication based on interviews with government officials and interest groups, working on disaster and foreigners in Japan and possibly other countries. This is still in its planning phase.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Our intent going forward is to conduct a final albeit small workshop in Japan that will seek the participation of several stakeholders previously interviewed. It is hoped that the project team will be able to discuss findings with these stakeholders. The final outcomes of the project and this workshop will be compiled into a final report. The execution of this initiative is currently being planned for the second half of 2022, depending on easing of travel restrictions.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Dependent on international borders reopening, the project team hopes to conduct a small workshop in Japan that includes several key interviewees. The team intends to discuss outcomes of the research with these stakeholders and the proceedings will form a final report for the project. The team is contributing to the remuneration of an administrator, who is assisting with multiple projects within Nagoya University. The administrator will assist with financial acquittals, travel arrangements and other administrative tasks as required.
