Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The research team has identified principal theories which have potential to contribute significantly to tourism research literature. The resilience theory and socio-ecological system approach to study disaster-affected destinations have been well advocated in tourism studies. Furthermore, the research team also identified the linkages between human migration in and out of disaster-affected area. Findings on demographic change and migration from this study set a new research direction to focus on the human-nature relationship in post-disaster recovery. The human-nature interconnectedness will furthered be developed in another paper.
In the course this year, the research team has successfully invited a world-renowned researcher on sustainable tourism, Professor David Weaver, formerly affiliated with Griffith University (Australia), to mentor research activities and to assist with publication of research outcomes in top journals. The team has submitted two papers to top journals for review.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In AY 2019, the research team plans to conduct the following activities: (1)Organize an international workshop on tourism destination resilience and invite an international expert, Prof. Alan Lew, of Northern Arizona University (USA) to APU to deliver a lecture on his new theory of Time and Space of Tourism Destination Resilience; (2)Organize an international workshop in publishing on top journals delivered by the Editor-in-chief of Tourism Geographies for faculty and graduate students, in addition on training the research team for publishing; (3)Organize a seminar with the Tourism and Convention Center of Kesennuma City to present on a solution to utilize Tourism as a strategy to recover. The Seminar is a result of two years research with analytical framework and results of fieldwork to offer local community a direction for further development of tourism products. (4)Present research findings at two international conferences scheduled in July 2019 and Mar. 2020; (5)Present research findings as a Keynote Speaker at a international conference on Sustainable Niche Tourism in Da Nang, Vietnam, Jun. 2019; (6)Continue to analyze data and write at least two papers for publication.
