Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
According to our plans for this year, we have focused on creating intelligent user interfaces that utilize the eye-gaze. We have developed a system that compensates the user's loss of the visual field caused by the occlusion of the user's view by the frame of the head-mounted-display. We proposed two compensation methods that took advantage of the user's view to alert them to movement in the occluded area. The first method displayed the detected motion direction in the center of the user's view, while the second method activated LEDs attached to the frame of the head-mounted display, prompting brightness changes in the peripheral vision and attracting the user's gaze. Our results show that both methods are effective to alert users of movement in the occluded areas. We have also addressed the issue of visibility of virtual content shown on the optical see-through head-mounted display under different scene luminance. We developed a method that automatically adjusts the brightness of the content shown on the display dependent on the size of the user's pupil. We compare how users perceive different content shown on an optical see-through head-mounted display with our method and static brightness. Our results show that users preferred utilizing our intelligent adjustment method.
