Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This past fiscal year continued upon good progress in conducting food skill benchmarking in Cambodia and adapting the framework to the Japanese context. Due to fast progress in Cambodia, a small advance of research funding was requested to complete data gathering in Cambodia. This allowed 4 additional schools, both public and private, to participate in the program in semi-urban and rural provincial areas of Cambodia. This has added around 200 data points and helped to round out the data to be more representative of the broader Cambodian population. Previously, the capital city was overly represented.
In Japan, however, regulatory and administrative challenges in Japan have slowed down implementation of food skill benchmarking, so these will be more actively conducted in the subsequent fiscal year. Currently, the Board of Education of Kyoto City has tentatively approved our proposal and implementation will commence in June 2019.
The fiscal year was very fruitful in terms of conference participation and writing of academic and report-type publications. In addition to three major international conference presentations, the research project has been presented in a number of small working groups in different university departments in Japan, Vietnam and Malaysia. In addition, two publications are in processing from the fiscal year work. One theoretical paper has been approved for publication in an edited volume and will be finalized in the next fiscal year. A second methodological paper about the food benchmarking activities has been submitted to 2nd tier Food Studies journal.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The accomplishments in Cambodia in FY2018 have nearly completed all of the Cambodia portion of this research project. Only small follow-up interview by telephone and data cleaning and analysis are required. This has helped create a strong curriculum for the Japanese context. However, as predicted, there have been administrative difficulties to access all sorts of schools in the Kyoto area.
As a result of these administrative delays, implementation in Japan is around 4 months delayed. This is not anticipated to impact the completion of data gathering in FY2019 but perhaps publications will exceed the project period as a result of this delay.
Other aspects of the project plan, such as the foodshed mapping (surveying the food options available in school cycling and walking range), are being conducted on schedule.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Pending Board of Education approval from Kyoto City (ongoing now), the research team for Japan has already will implement food benchmarking in one private and one public school as a first pilot in June 2019. After monitoring and refining the program, further implementation will take place in November 2019 in other Kansai area schools. This is approximately 4 months delayed.
A workshop for program implementation and initial analysis is organized at Kyoto University with external advisors for August 2019. Data proofing and further analytical procedures will be developed then.
After Japan-country data collecting is complete February 2019, empirical publications concerning Cambodia will simultaneously be written and submitted. Empirical publications and reports concerning the combined Japan/Cambodia comparison will be worked on as the research period closes. The primary target publication sites are journals in the area of Food Education. This publication schedule is essentially on schedule.

Causes of Carryover |
An advance-use request for YEN 200,000 was made for use in FY2018. The residual amount after using this advance in FY2018 was only YEN 6,082. Please make this amount available for use in FY2019.
