Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research project looks at the development of tourism in Japan across the war and early post-war periods in Japan. These case studies shed light on the complex relationship between tourism and war in modern societies. The researcher planned on gathering materials in both domestic and international libraries in 2017. However, due to work and family commitments only domestic research trips were possible. As a result materials were gathered in Kyushu (Fukuoka and Oita Prefecture) and Tokyo. Materials from these research trips, as well as information gathered from newspapers and other sources were used in an article and journal special that are currently being reviewed. One academic presentation of these results was also made during the period.

Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Materials were gathered in Kyushu (Fukuoka and Oita Prefecture) and Tokyo. Materials from these research trips, as well as information gathered from newspapers and other sources were used in an article and journal special that are currently being reviewed. One academic presentation of these results was also made during the period. International research trips that were planned for the year were postponed to the second year due to work and family reasons. Still, the project is proceeding well.

Research trips to the National Archives in the USA and National Archives in Australia are planned for the current year (2018). In these the researcher will collect materials related to the occupation of Japan by the US and Commonwealth forces. Domestic and international presentations on materials gathered so far are also being planned.

Causes of Carryover |
The researcher was not able to conduct international research to the USA and Australia in 2017 due to work and family commitments. These will be conducted in the 2018 fiscal year.
