Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This past year was a productive one for this research project. I was able to attend a conference in Seoul where I presented on the self and AI and the possibility of AI developing its own self. That was an extremely helpful time and I gained very, very much from the other conference participants and attendants. I also was able to travel to Tokyo and meet an internationally distinguished researcher on the self and hear two talks given by him on his current research. All of this went into my own work and I was able to complete an initial draft of my book after extensive re-working of earlier chapters. My thinking on the subject has become much clearer and I judge that the self-theory I was able to develop is a sound one and should be able to withstand criticism from other researchers. Overall I am pleased with how everything has developed.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Unfortunately I had a sudden illness last year which prevented me from traveling to the UK where I had planned to meet a researcher and access facilities at a university there. However, my research and writing here has progressed well and so although not everything last year went according to plan I am still largely on track. I should be able to finish within the allotted time.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

With my book's initial draft completed I will now begin editing it and preparing it for submission to a publisher. With luck I will be able to find a company willing to work with me, but for now the task of editing remains more prominently on my mind. The work is good, I think, and in a good condition, but it needs some polishing. That will be the focus of this year, and if possible I also want to make the trip to the UK that my illness forced me to cancel last year.

Causes of Carryover

This amount is what remains from the initial grant awarded. I plan to use it to complete the writing and editing of my book, and towards that I hope to finally be able to make the trip to the UK to meet a researcher and make use of the institutional facilities at the University of Wales that I had planned to do last year. In addition to that I suspect that there might be some costs involved with a publisher if I am able to secure one, at least in meeting and going over plans and drafts. As far as items go I shouldn't need any more, but something may come up. My focus will be on the completion and publication of my research.
