Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the course of this past year I had a number of health issues which prevented me from travelling internationally as I had planned, and thus I was unable to use a large part of the grant money. This was regrettable but unavoidable given the circumstances. Nevertheless I was able to complete my research, write a book, and achieve my goal of finding a publisher for my work. My research into an alternative view on the self took the final form of a book in six parts: 1) A summary of contemporary accounts and a critique of each, thus establishing the need (or preference) for an alternative, 2) An explication of the applicable psychological and embedded factors relating to self-view and a proposal for said alternative self-view, 3) Phenomenological considerations concerning self-view, 4) Panpsychism and subjecthood questions concerning self-view (connecting and transitioning into further contemporary research), 5) Consciousness issues concerning self-view (combining philosophical, psychological, and cognitive issues), and 6) Metaphysics, time (considered experientially and conceptually), and how the proffered self-view might be thought "real" in a "realist theory of the self" sense. This last part entailed something of a breakthrough, I thought, as an opening for a realism that is not of the hard Cartesian type seemed to present itself. The final book form of my research will be published by Brill Academic Publishing (Leiden, the Netherlands).
