Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
1. I have established foundations for a better understanding of the nature of mindfulness according to Buddhism as a whole, and especially in Tibet. In this aim, I have presented at the Japanese Association of Mindfulness a paper on "correct mindfulness" according to the model of the "three wisdoms" (三慧). 2. I have presented first results of this research on mindfulness in rDzogs chen at the Dzokchen Initiative Annual Gathering, organized by David Germano (University of Virginia, USA). 3. I have continued my research on the works of Klong chen pa (Tibet, 14th c.), and decided to focus on his Trilogy of Rest which explains better the approach of the progressive path. 4. I have started to translate two texts by 'Jigs med gling pa on "mindfulness and meta-awareness" (正念正知).

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
1. I have spent a lot of time at clarifying the notion of mindfulness in the general Buddhist framework, and defined especially as the monitor of attention, and examined its connection with memory. I have thus anticipated on the plan for year 4, and already communicated results to an interdisciplinary audience of mindfulness researchers (advance). 2. The research on Klong chen pa's corpus has been expanded from the initial plan to focus on his Seven Treasuries in order to include his Trilogy of Rest as well. I have thus to finish this part in year 3. (Slight delay) 3. I have actually already anticipated on the plan for year 3 by working already on the works of 'Jigs med gling pa. (Slight advance)

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
1. This year I will present major research results at the conference of the International Association of Tibetan Studies to be held in July 2019 in Paris. I have decided to focus mainly on mindfulness within the progressive framework of Klong chen pa's Trilogy of Rest. Paper will be published this year. A Japanese version of the paper is also to be translated and to be published. 2. Then I will finalize the translation of the two texts by 'Jigs med gling pa with the collaboration of my colleague Dr. Michael Sheehy (University of Virginia, USA). This shall be published as a book in English. 3. I will publish the paper presented at the Japanese Association of Mindfulness in a transdisciplinary journal of research on mindfulness. 4. I will expand the research on Klong chen pa in a book in French.

Causes of Carryover |
I have asked to keep 454, 882円 because I will need a larger budget for the following reasons: 1. The trip to Paris for the International Association of Tibetan Studies, 7-13 July ; 2. Reward for my Tibetan native speaker, Lobsang Gnon Na as Office Assistant who helps me to collect, edit and translate Tibetan materials; 3. Invitations and rewards for two research collaborators: Gaelle Desbordes, neuroscientist specialist of mindfulness from Harvard Medical School, and Michael Chase, philosopher working on attentiveness in Western philosophy from CNRS, Paris; 4. Purchase of books and material
