Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year has been fruitful for research on "mindfulness" (Sanskrit: smRti; Tibetan: dran pa; Chinese: 念) according to the works of Tibetan author Longchenpa (1308-1364). After considering his whole corpus, I have decided to select especially his Trilogy of Rest (Ngal gso skor gsum). A paper on this topic was presented at the conference of the International Association for Tibetan Studies in Paris. Then the paper was submitted to the journal Philosophy East and West, and translated into Japanese for a collective book. Showing the various meanings, levels and functions of mindfulness in this classical synthesis of Dzogchen, I have shown how it monitors both memory and attention and analyzed its philosophical significance as the "conversion of attention."

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The objectives of the second year are being completed by the end of this 3rd year. The reason is that I decided to expand my investigations not only to the so-called Seven Treasures (Mdzod bdun) of Longchenpa but to the Trilogy of Rest (Ngal gso skor gsum) as well. Nevertheless, during this third year, I have actually well advanced the initial objectives of the 3rd year, that is: research on later authors. I have thus translated an entire text by Jigme Lingpa (1730-1798), and accomplished research on several other authors (4th Dodrubchen, Dza Patrul, etc.). A paper on this topic in now being finalized. Thus, this fourth and final year, I will be able to accomplish the initial goals in terms of research plan and related publications.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This 4th and final year, I will thus submit a paper on mindfulness in Dzogchen according to authors after Longchenpa, especially Jigme Lingpa by focusing on a special text on "mindfulness and vigilance" (smRti-saMprajanya, dran pa dang shes bzhin, 正念正知). Due to the current crisis, I will not be able to organize an interdisciplinary panel in Buddhist studies on mindfulness. But as initially planned, I will submit a paper reviewing main research and results of this project to an interdisciplinary journal on mindfulness, so that the results of this project in Tibetan Buddhist studies can also be communicated to a wider audience of researchers interested in Buddhist meditation and mindfulness, especially according to the tradition of Dzogchen that is the main focus on this project.
|
Causes of Carryover |
This year, it seems it won't be possible to travel and thus to organize a panel as initially schedule. Thus I will focus entirely on publications, sending two papers in referred journals. In this aim, I will use the funds to purchase further materials (new computer and new software), books regarding Tibetan Buddhism, Dzogchen and mindfulness, and pay for an office assistant in order to organize materials and references.
