Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The grant allowed me to by precious books on the nuclear age for my research. These books include a recent photo album by Toyosaki Hiromitsu on the Bikini incident, or a vintage novel called Radium Terror, a Mystery Story. While the book was particularly expensive because it was printed in 1912, the story and its illustrations were important. It contained some original copyright-free etchings that I could scan and use as illustrations for my own coming book on the arts of the nuclear age. Consequently, I could enrich my research in terms of content and visual material.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

The finishing and copy-editing of my book took longer than I thought. Because of this, I could not initially travel to Paris or to the Bikini and Moruroa Atolls as planned. I wish to go next academic year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

My book will be published by MIT Press in December 2018. Following this publication, I hope to organise a conference coinciding with a book launch. I also wish to go visiting the Bikini and Moruroa atolls, where so many bombs were tested during the Cold War. I want to see for myself the impact on the islands as much as research on the arts of Oceania expressing nuclear realities. Initially, I had apply to go to Paris, to research on the Curies, but going to Oceania appears more important now.

Causes of Carryover

To finish and go through the copy-edit version of my book too a lot longer than I thought.
I hope to use this budget in the current fiscal year.
