Outline of Final Research Achievements

The subject of this research was Roman Quadriennales from 1931 to 1956. It attempted to analyze this art exhibition and its involvement with artists, critics, or Italian society. As a result, I have clarified two main points. The first was an overview of the Roman Quadriennales, including the participating works and their scale, changes in the secretariat and management organization, and rearrangements of the exhibition rules during and after the war. For example, since 1935, regulations and management systems have played a vital role in changing the way exhibitions worked. Second, I have made it clear that the Quadriennales were linked to the trend of internationalization of art, such as its involvement with the Italian Contemporary Art Exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. These two points are historical and concrete reference points for considering the development of today's art or its exhibition method.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

「規定の変更」とは、ジャンルやサイズの選定から自由度を失わせる改変であった。それは、ファシズムの時代から戦後の民主社会への移行期にあって、表現の自由が狭められていくという逆説であった。ただ、この国の美術が国際的なマーケットの要請にそって、作品のなかに「イタリアらしさ」を自己演出しようとしていたことを見逃すべきではない。
こうした事実や特徴を突き止めたことにより、日本各地で開催される芸術祭への教訓を得た。第一に、定期美術展は国や地域単位の問題ではなく、国際動向や芸術への認識など、広い射程をもって議論されるべきである点、第二に、「展示のレトリック」はより深く検討される問題である、ということである。
