Outline of Final Research Achievements

The analysis of the accent data of the ten Izumo dialects enabled us to find that the accentual contrast between class 2.4 and 2.5 in Izumo-Taisha dialect may not go back to the proto　language stage.
I also analyzed the sound correspondences between Izumo and Old-Central Japanese, and found that the "mid-vowel-raising", which have occurred in the Central Japanese, may not have occurred in Izumo dialect.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

大社方言以外では，京都方言を中心とする中央方言とそれに地理的に連続する地域でのみ２拍名詞４類と５類のアクセントが区別されている。そのために両類の区別が中央方言における二次的な改新の結果であるとする説もあった。このことも考慮すると，「大社式アクセント」における両類の区別が祖語に遡らないとする本研究の成果は，日本語アクセント史研究に重大な貢献をもたらすものと言える。また，出雲方言が「狭母音化」と呼ばれる音変化を経験していないとする本研究の成果は，出雲方言の共時的・通時的研究が，日本語諸方言を対象とする比較言語学的研究に貢献し得ることを示したという点において重要である。
