Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The interaction analysis framework (Ike & Mulder, 2016) was used to analyse backchannel usage in Australian English. The detailed analysis suggests that, while AusE speakers do occasionally display backchannel sequences in their intra-cultural interactions, such sequences are a bi-product of their turn-taking and stance alignment strategies, and not a primary result or an intentionally created instance. A significant difference between JE and AusE is that backchannel sequences are often used to build rapport in JE, but often used as a part of turn-taking strategies in AusE. While JE speakers are oriented to rapport enhancement through backchannel sequences, AusE speakers are oriented to rapport maintenance through such sequences. Further analysis of ELF interactions between Japanese English speakers and AusE speakers then reveals that, while both participants use a range of accommodation strategies regarding backchannel sequences, the strategies are limited to their available resources. That is, anything outside their linguistic repertoire cannot be used in negotiating backchannel behaviour. Consequently, the functions and phases within a bachchannel sequence in ELF are different from either intra-variety conversations. The results were presented at the 20th Annual meeting of Pragmatic Society of Japan.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We have achieved significant results from analysing Australian English and Japanese English, as planned.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The research plan needs to be modified, as JE-AusE ELF communication needs further analysis with more data. Instead of proceeding to data collection of American English and Korean English, it has been decided to look at Japanese conversation data for better understanding of backchannel behaviour of Japanese English speakers.
