Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Due to the pandemic, presenting opportunities continued to be fairly limited. As we deal with fine levels of interaction management strategies that are observed in less than half a second, showing data in online conferences does not always work. Also for the same reason, being unable to work in the same place with the research collaborator significantly slowed down out data analysis. However, we managed to test our four-layer framework of interaction (tentatively named "Interactional Space Model") with our data. The framework shows that interaction can be analysed as a space, rather than a traditional sense of discouse. Linguistic resources such as speech, eye gaze, nodding and smiles, can function in four different levels of interaction. In other words, individual elements that are employed in interaction have linguistic meaning, structual meaning (managing turn constructions), interactional meaning (stance taking), and social meaning (managing interpersonal relationship). The initial analysis was done with smiles in Japanese conversation and published, and a detailed analysis of smiles in Japanese English and Australian English was presented at the Facial Gestures in Interaction 2nd International Workshop. ELF interaction needs further analysis, but we are confident that the framework will enable us to visualise the negotiation and accommodation works in ELF interactions as well.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to the pandemic, I was unable to travel to Australia and further proceed the data analysis with the research collaborator.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will conduct the final test of the framework by analysing ELF interactions. This will reveal all the levels of interaction management strategies employed in cross-cultural communication, and the framework can be applied to a range of linguistic and cross-linguistic analyses.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Due to the pandemic, I was unable to travel to Australia for data analysis. It will be used in 2022 as travel expense, to finalise our data analysis in Australia.
