Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This was scheduled to be the final year of research for this kakenhi grant-in-aid for scientific research. It was originally scheduled/planned that this final year would be dedicated to dissemination of research findings and results at several international conferences and via publishing several small manuscripts in open access journals in Japan and/or internationally. Research presentations were made in both Korea and Japan at the Japan association for language teaching (JALT) and Korea teaching English to speakers of other languages (KOTESOL) conferences. The JALT presentation parsed qualitative findings of ALTs and JTEs feelings about team-teaching, while the KOTESOL presentation was focused on the statistical validation of a Japanese version of the Sojourner Self-Efficacy in Communication Scale (SSEC) that was completed by ALTs (in English) and JTEs (in Japanese). The JALT presentation led to a manuscript which is currently in-press and will be open access. Additionally, presentation abstracts were acceptedFor international conferences in Cambodia Thailand and in the US. However, due to COVID-19 these conferences were either canceled or I determined it was a health risk to travel. Therefore, I decided to extend this grant-in-aid for scientific research an additional year in the hope that attending similar conferences next year will be possible. I am also working on contingency plans for disseminating results should COVID-19 make presenting at international conferences impossible yet again.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
To be clear: ALL DATA was collected during the first year of this grant-in-aid for scientific research. Additionally, several small publications and presentations at international conferences have been successfully published/delivered. I am marking this as Slightly Delayed (やや遅くれている) only because COVID-19 interrupted the dissemination of results that were to be delivered at the following conferences: Thai TESOL (January, 2020 - unsafe to travel) CAMTESOL (February 2020 - unsafe to travel) TESOL (March - April 2020 - unsafe to travel AND Japanese international travel restrictions would have made it impossible to return to Japan. This would have meant my job was at risk had I traveled to this conference.) The abstracts for these conference presentations were accepted, and my presentations were scheduled. However, by not attending these conferences I was no longer eligible to publish manuscripts in the open-access conference proceedings. Had COVID-19 not happened, I would have selected "Progressing more smoothly than initially planned."

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
My future plans for this research are simple: 1. I intend to apply to the same conferences (Thai TESOL, CAMTESOL, and TESOL) for 2021. 2. I intend to publish proceedings papers for these conferences. 3. I intend to publish an additional manuscript related to validating the Japanese version of the Behavior and Instructional Management Scale (BIMS). If the conferences are again canceled or it is unsafe to travel due to COVID-19 (or for some other reason), I intend to make presentations electronically when possible, record the presentations, and make them publicly available via YouTube and my own website. Additionally, I am considering mailing a physical letter to major boards of education around Japan notifying them that they can watch these videos and access published manuscripts related to this grant-in-aid for scientific research via my personal website (which I am building).
|
Causes of Carryover |
The primary reason such a substantial amount of funding remains is again due to the cancellation of all costs associated with travel to 4 international conferences (one in Cambodia, one in Thailand, two in the United States) at which I was supposed to make 3 presentations. I am currently planning to attend these conferences in 2021. However I am also developing a plan to disseminate research findings via: YouTube, my own website, and sending a hard copy of a summary of research findings to boards of education all around Japan.
