Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
2nd round of interviews with teaching assistants, teachers, and administrators complete - this makes 99 interviews in total over the last two years. These interviews have been taken at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University and Kyushu University. This concludes the period of data collection and the project can now proceed to the stage of publishing the findings. These findings support the initial conclusion that teaching assistant programs would be improved by improving communication between program stakeholders. Interview testimony has been recorded, transcribed and tagged in preparation for writing either a paper or book from the results of the two rounds of interviews. Results of work were presented at conferences in Tokyo and Shizuoka.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The interviews were completed earlier than expected which has allowed for work to be completed in the transcribing and tagging of data. This was completed at an earlier stage than in year one thanks to the connections already made with teaching assistants and teachers, and an underlying trust from the participants. The earlier completion of Stage 1 interviews allowed for more time to be spent with Stage 2 (follow-up) interviews, and now that these are also completed, I have the time to work with the data to prepare a thorough spoken and written publication of this work.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This year will have two more research presentations. I have applied to Routledge books for the possibility of writing a book based on this research and the links between teaching assistant programs and university internationalization. In addition, I will be interviewing students on camera to add their experiences as teaching assistants to a package of materials to assist with other TA programs. These interviews will form the basis of course materials to help students at Kyushu University interact more effectively with teaching assistants and thereby improve their abilities to interact with international students on campus and in class.

Causes of Carryover |
This year will include travel to a conference in Europe which will be a more expensive travel plan than previously incurred. Therefore, it was necessary to save money from the previous year.
