Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This project examined the multinational composition of the British army in the long eighteenth century and its effect on the soldiers' collective identities. The exhaustive analysis of the relevant sources, both public and private records, showed that the eighteenth century witnessed a growing multinationalisation of the British army, and accordingly nationality worked as a bond among the soldiers of the same national origin. At the same time, active comradeship was also developed in the individual regiments, and it encouraged different nationalities to have a common sense of belonging. Thus, this project suggested, by the end of the long eighteenth century, soldiers of the British army had formed an overarching common identity which helped ‘the army composed of three nations’ to be united effectively.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
