Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research is to understand how wine tourism is constructed as a cultural experience in and outside of Japan. It takes a comparative perspective with a concentration on Japan. Based on fieldwork in 2019 along with those conducted in the previous two years, this research has achieved to provide a broader picture of wine tourism as a cultural practice from a global perspective and find out the globally adopted forms and local inventions, especially resulted from fieldwork of new locations--Yamagata, Ishikawa, and Canada. Yamagata confirms the spread of global form of wine tourism through domestic actors. Ishikawa shows local adaptations. Canada is an important 'discovery' as it shares similarities with Japan. However, the cultural experiences produced in both contexts are different.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I could conduct the fieldwork mentioned in Summary of Research Achievements. Besides, I also did fieldwork in Yamanashi, where I have been conducting fieldwork since the beginning of this research. The fieldwork in 2019 was on the one hand following up the observations that I did on the same subject in the previous years. On the other, it explored a newly established form of wine tourism within the concept of heritage in Japan. Moreover, I could also present my research in an international conference on Asian wine market/wine tourism held in Hong Kong. This conference was significant in that it confirmed the shortage of Japanese wine's presence in the international market comparing with its Asian counterparts but suggests a great potential for both Japan's wine and wine tourism industry.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2020, I am aiming to focus on organizing and publishing findings.
|
Causes of Carryover |
I will need to do some domestic following up fieldwork in Japan and also need to purchase books for composing and publishing research findings.
