Outline of Final Research Achievements

What functions do free will beliefs (beliefs that free will exists) have in our social life? The present research found that people's belief in free will increases a sense of well-being. On the other hand, belief in determinism has effects of decreasing a sense of well-being. These effects, however, were not consistently observed, and they were suggested to vary depending on conditions such as types of determinism.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

過去の研究では、「人々にとって自由意志が何を意味するか」が明らかになっている。それらの知見をふまえ、本研究は自由意志信念がもたらす機能（ウェルビーイングの促進）や、それらの機能が働かない条件（決定論／運命論に関する信念）を実証的に示した。ただし、後者の条件に関する知見は再現性に課題があり、決定論に関する人々の概念分析の必要性が示唆される。また自由意志や決定論にまつわる人々の信念体系は、かならずしも一貫してはいない可能性も指摘できるだろう。以上のように、本研究は自由意志信念の機能について理解を深めるとともに、そこでの課題を示した点で意義があると考えられる。
