Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The experiments conducted in FY 2017 and FY 2018 have shown initial evidence that attentional manipulation of task-irrelevant object dimensions within visual working memory may differ between spatial and non-spatial dimensions. In FY 2019, a series of new analyses were performed to improve understanding of the mechanisms of voluntary suppression of spatial and non-spatial dimensions. Specifically, systematic analyses of attentional effects in each change type condition provide further convincing evidence indicating a special role of the spatial dimension in visual working memory representations. In addition to the above investigation, attentional control via order information has been further examined based on the findings obtained in FY 2018. The experiments conducted in FY 2019 suggest that the ability to retrospectively use order information to manipulate visual working memory representations is limited by the storage capacity of visual working memory.
