Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the third and final year of the grant, I was able to finalize the project, as well as begin exploring new directions for research. Beginning with a major symposium held at East China Normal University and published as a Special Issue of the East China Normal Review (Silova, Rappleye, Yun 2020), we were able to expand findings that primarily centered on Japan and Taiwan into dialogue with schlolars from China and Hong Kong. This year also saw the deepening of links to Taiwanese scholars discussing similar issues, particularly those interested in the development of original theory. At the same time, the theoretical dimensions of this project became more important in this final year, culminating in a plenary session at the annual Comparative Education Society of North America conference (CIES) wherein 'alternative' ways of thinking about education was the focus. Although cut short by the COVID pandemic, there was a clear movement of the research in the final half of the third year towards themes that extend beyond cognitive achievement: more towards non-cognitive achievement and environmental concerns.
