Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
(I) Data from the FY2017 social networks survey was analyzed yielding the following results: (a) Japanese ego-centric social networks might be considerably smaller than those of Europe and the Americas, (b) distance distribution of ego-centric networks might not follow a power law distribution as suggested in the literature, and (c) homophily and distance are important factors influencing friendship formation. (II)Due to the non-probability nature of the survey results cannot be generalized. To address this, a new survey was conducted using a random sample. This survey was conducted between Mar. 1st 2019 and Apr. 23 2019. (III) Using the data from (II) An international comparison of 5 countries was started in Feb. 2019 with additional data from Switzerland, Netherlands, Chile and Canada.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The analysis of the survey data yielded some unexpected results, that were different from relevant benchmark data. As such, to be able to verify and generalize these findings, a new survey was conducted using a probability sample.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
(I) Int'l comparison of social networks and interactions: Using data from our survey and 4 other countries, a comparative study is under way, focusing on (a) factors affecting social interaction frequencies by mode, and (b) distribution patterns of social networks. (II) Follow up survey on social networks and travel: Using a sub-sample of respondents from the main survey, a new survey is being designed focusing specifically on travel behavior while accounting for social networks of respondents. This survey will be conducted in lieu of the probe-person survey originally planned, due to budgetary reasons. (III) Use data from both surveys to develop a travel behavior model incorporating social network characteristics. (IV) Incorporate output from (I,II,III) in activity patter simulator.

Causes of Carryover |
The amount carried over to the next fiscal year will be used to pay for the FY2018 probability survey, given that the completion is on FY2019.
The remaining is mostly earmarked for the follow-up survey on social networks and travel behavior.
