Outline of Annual Research Achievements

From a transportation perspective, the study of face-to-face and ICT-mediated social interactions is of importance since these changing communication patterns might affect demand dynamics on urban environment and transportation systems.

(I) Using data from a probability survey conducted in 2019, an in-depth analysis of social network characteristics and interaction patterns in the Greater Tokyo Area, and an international comparison across 5 countries was conducted(Japan, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Canada and Chile).
Analysis of yearly contact frequencies by mode (face-to-face, phone, internet) showed the existence of very consistent associations between social interaction frequency and some individual and relational characteristics such as network size, distance and emotional closeness, irrespective of socio-cultural context. At the same time, for variables such as education level, gender and relationship type, effect patterns were less clear. These differences might be explained not only by socio-economic and cultural factors, but also by methodological differences in terms of sampling, survey medium and question formulation.

(II) A follow-up survey was conducted on a sub-sample of the respondents of the previous survey to gather detailed information on joint activities among network members elicited in the previous survey. The survey was conducted in early 2020. This survey was conducted due to the need for new data collection efforts that explicitly measure travel behavior and companionship in a detailed manner. The analysis of this data remains a future task.
