KeywordsSoundscape / Bioacoustics / Biodiversity / Animal Behavior / Remote Sensing
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The purpose of this project is to develop an acoustic monitoring network for Okinawa, develop the tools necessary to use this network to test ecological hypotheses, and to apply this network to increase our understanding of important of different factors in determining the spatial distribution of biodiversity.
The development and installation of an acoustic monitoring network on Okinawa has been completed, and the acoustic monitoring devices have been maintained in the field for a period of two years. Monitoring using devices purchased with this grant is expected to continue at least another two years.
Software tools have been developed to detect species automatically, and are running on OIST’s supercomputer. The data collected using this project are part of collaborations with researchers in Japan, as well as Ireland and Norway. These studies will use the sound data to test how human activity affects the diversity and stability of ecosystems in Okinawa.
This research resulted in an award from the Ecological Society of Japan in 2019, and 10 articles were published since 2017. Results were communicated to the public through 8 open seminars, 3 TV appearances, and an exhibit at the Okinawa City Museum.
