Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The MSC death modulation function appears to contribute a part of the therapeutic effects of MSCs for various diseases. We found that this function is implemented predominantly by MSCs through modes of actions implying direct cell-to-cell interactions requiring cell contact enabling the transfer of mitochondria from MSCs to unfit cells. Moreover, we developed an in vitro potency test to discriminate between MSCs with enhanced capabilities to modulate cell death in human macrophages and epithelial cells undergoing cell death processes and those of lesser capabilities.Hence, we identified 1) the mechanisms of action of MSCs in preventing cell death and, we brought 2) the biological basis to implement selection protocols for MSCs to improve and ensure MSC therapy efficacy in clinical setting.
