Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the first quarter of the year, I have undertaken an extended research trip to India and visited a number of traditional “paa.tha"saalaa-s”, Sanskrit universities and private educators (primarily in Karnataka). I conducted interviews, made new contacts and collected important audio-visual data. Furthermore, I concentrated on the critical study of the following texts: (1) Naage"sa's commentary on the Kuvalayaananda, (2) Vaidyanaatha Payagunde's Laghukuvalayaananda, (3) Pa.n.ditaraaja's commentary on the Kaavyaprakaa"sa, as well as (4) Appayadiik.sita's commentary on the Yaadavaabhyudaya and (5) on his own Varadaaraajastava. (1), (2) and (3) still remain unpublished. During my short trip to India in Feb 2018, I was able to collect important manuscripts of these texts.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Unlike expected, during my first trip to India I was able to collect a bit less less audio-visual data and conduct less interviews than expected. The reason for this was that I was not able to get in contact with most of the educational centres in Indian while I was in Japan. Now that I have collected a database of important contacts, I hope to be able to conduct another trip to India during this year. The study of the textual material, on the other hand, was very smooth. I was able to collect some important MSS (which I was partly not aware of before), so that I can progress very well.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During the current year, I plan to proceed with the textual studies and, towards the end of the year, conduct another research trip to India.
