Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the second research year, my work was confined to two fields: (1) Working on textual material pertaining to the role of belles lettres in the “traditional” Sanskrit education ; (2) Online interviews with “traditional” Sanskrit educators in India and other parts of the world: (1) During the first half of year, I put the main focus of my research on studying the role of Sanskrit commentaries on poetry in popularizing their respective “root texts” (i.e., the actual poems) and in forming of what I call a “canon” of Sanskrit literature. During the second half year, I focused mainly on looking at the ways how certain developments within the Paninian tradition of Sanskrit grammar may have been inspired by certain usages found in Sanskrit poetry. (2) During my field research last year, I became aware of the importance that the online education plays currently within the segment that still can identifies itself as “traditional Sanskrit education”. During the past year, I have been exploring this area of research, participating at a number of online classes myself (on Sanskrit poetry as well as other fields of knowledge) and conducting interviews with the educators (about their own educational careers) as well as with other participants (about their experience, goals etc.). In addition to that, I have started working on the preparation of a web site, which will contain informations about various modes of traditional Sanskrit education.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I was able to conduct whatever research activities I planned. Furthermore, I was exploring the possibilities of conducting interviews with Sanskrit educators online without traveling to India.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the coming year, I plan to further concentrate on the study of the commentaries on the works of Sanskrit poetics. I will, furthermore, conduct a final trip to India to record a number of interviews. I will launch the informational website.
|
Causes of Carryover |
I will once again travel to India in summer 2019 and organize a conference in Feb-March 2020.
