KLEBANOV ANDREY  京都大学, 文学研究科, 特定外国語担当講師 (60794956)

Project Period (FY) 2017-04-01 – 2022-03-31
KeywordsSanskrit / literary canon / traditional scholarship / Sanskrit education / Ayurveda
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Last year, I published two articles dealing with another living scholarly tradition in India, namely, the Ayurveda. The papers focus on the dynamics involved in the making and solidifying of a literary canon of a single learned tradition in India, and their findings help understand such processes in general.
This year, I have collaborated with two large international research projects based at the University of Alberta, Canada, and the Hebrew University, Israel.
I have continued my non-text-based research and conducted online interviews with traditional scholars in India.
I was invited to host the results of my research at an evolving database maintained and supported by the Israel Science Foundation, and I am considering this invitation.
I hosted an international research workshop online.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

Due to recent travel restrictions, I was not able to travel to India to conduct the necessary field research or to organize a workshop in Kyoto. It took me some time to find ways to conduct interviews online (the medium imposes, however, unscalable limitations) and to transform an idea of an actual research workshop to a series of online meetings and an online workshop.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

I will complete several papers dealing with various aspects of literary canon in different learned traditions in India. I will employ a research assistant to help me process the video and audio data. I will hopefully obtain help from applied linguists on how to process the collected interview data in the best way.

Causes of Carryover

I want to complete my research project that I was not able to complete dur to the limitations imposed by the many restrictions on account of the COVID-19 pandemics.
