Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
A comparative analysis of entrepreneurial behavior was conducted among households with no migrants (HNM) versus households with returnee migrants (HRM) and households with current migrants (HCM). To address possible endogeneity between migration and employment decisions, estimations are conducted using a trivariate recursive probit model. The self-employment choice of the households is tested as a function of demographic, socio-economic, and geographic variables along with the indicator of whether the households belong to one of the three migration categories mentioned above. Results indicate that the probability of entrepreneurship is higher among HRM, as these households benefit from better access to financial and physical resources, skills development opportunities, and social networks. Entrepreneurship among HCM is possibly hampered due to absent human resources despite better access to financial resources. Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Business trip to Nepal has been constantly restricted over the past year due to COVID-19 pandemic situation. As a result field trips was not possible. Also, due to the severe pandemic situation in India, the 31st International Conference of the Agricultural Economists to be held in New Delhi in August 2021 was changed to online format. The budget allocated for research trips and conference presentations was thus unspent in this academic year as well.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The first half of the upcoming academic year is allocated for data analysis, submission of journal articles, and conference papers. It is expected that the review of these submissions will be received in the latter half of the academic year. Revised submissions will be made based on the referee’s comments during this period. Furthermore, preparation of new research proposal based on the results of this research project is planned for the last quarter of this academic year. Shortcomings of the current research and potential topics for future research has already been identified based on which future research will be designed and submitted for external funding. The remaining budget will be utilized for result dissemination through publications and presentations.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The budget for the last academic year was allocated for dissemination of research results, mainly through presentations. Unfortunately, travel to conferences has not been possible for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, we had a domestic conference presentation in Kyoto and international symposium in Hawaii, both of which was later converted to online platform due to the pandemic. Similarly, in 2021 we were supposed give a conference presentation in India, which was again held online for the same reasons. In 2022, the remaining budget will be used for result dissemination purposes, namely processing publication charges for journal articles and conference presentations, as per the feasibility.
