本研究は、腫瘍組織内のエネルギー代謝異常の可視化が可能な分子イメージングを用いてメタボロミクスの観点から腎腫瘍の新たな鑑別診断方法について検討することを目的とした。目標症例数を50例としたが、研究期間を通じての症例登録は4例のみであり、検討継続中である。
本研究の進捗状況の遅れから、転移性腎癌の分子生物学的検討を行った。当院において腎摘除もしくは腎部分切除が施行された転移性腎癌の切除検体のホルマリン固定パラフィン包埋（FFPE）組織を用いたマイクロアレイ解析を行い、tumor necrosis factor alpha-induced protein 3 (TNFAIP3)、joining chain of multimeric IgA and IgM (JCHAIN)、cyclin-dependent kinase 7 (CDK7)、developmentally regulated GTP binding protein 1 (DRG1)、glutamate receptor, ionotropic, AMPA4 (GRIA4)の5因子がfavorable群とpoor群の間で有意な発現差異を認めた。この遺伝子発現データをもとに生命情報学（バイオインフォマティクス）を応用したコネクティビティマップ（CMAP: Broad institute of MIT & Harvardが作成した遺伝子発現のデータベースで、様々な細胞に様々な薬剤を作用させて変化する遺伝子発現を網羅的に解析したもの）から遺伝子発現の再プログラム化を達成し得る候補薬剤を検討し、負の相関を示す化合物としてLY294002（PI3K阻害剤）を含む13種類の候補薬剤が同定された。
