Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I constructed and completed the survey as initially proposed. This included creating a survey questionnaire and defining sampling procedures. The data collection went smoothly and was completed ahead of schedule. Following completion of fielding the survey, I cleaned the data which included coding and organizing variables for statistical analysis. I completed initial data analysis testing the main hypotheses. After this preliminary analysis I began working on 2 papers to be presented at conferences in the fiscal year 2018. The first paper "Disentangling the relationship between socio- and ego-tropic trade attitudes: A survey experiment in Japan" has been accepted for presentation at Pacific International Politics Conference in Hong Kong and will be completed by July. The 2nd paper "Anti-Americanism, Leadership Credibility, and Support for US Foreign Policy" has been accepted for presentation at the American Political Science Association Conference in Boston and will be completed by August.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Everything is progressing as expected. The data collection stage went very smoothly and finished quicker than anticipated. The vender was very responsive and prioritized the project. One unexpected circumstance was the official visit by President Trump to Japan in November 2017 as this occurred during the fielding of the survey. It is possible that the increased media exposure of the US president being in Japan and the increased attention to foreign affairs and policy could have an impact of foreign policy preferences thus influencing the results of the survey. Statistical analysis of the data, however, show no systematic differences between respondents who completed the survey before or after the visit so this should not present a major problem moving forward although it is important to aknowledge.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Plans for future research are first to prepare the two main articles for presentation. Presentation at international conferences will provide necessary feedback for publishing the research in competitive peer-reviewed international journals. After receiving advice on the drafts, I will submit them for peer-review for publication. Some slight changes have been made to the research design as a result of the data collection process. Primarily a large number of respondents had uncertainty about their foreign policy preferences. This was not entirely unexpected but presents some statistical problems as there is less variation in the data than anticipated. The data sets used for the papers will be published with the Harvard Dataverse upon completion.

Causes of Carryover |
The official price offered by the vender changed slightly from the initial estimate as a result of a few minor changes to the questionnaire which reduced the survey time requirements. I will use the remaining sum (\5304) to purchase research supplies such as paper, printer ink, or other expendables necessary for the research project.
