Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I have developed a new PET compatible radio frequency (RF) coil for MRI systems - a microstrip transmission line coil. It is a multichannel coil, that increases the imaging quality to greater extent. It is feasible for ultrahigh magnetic field MRI systems. A provisional US patent from our institute has already been submitted for this new coil. A big portion of last year's budget was spent for this purpose.
Research for the targeted wireless PET could not be progressed as it was planned. The main reason was the unavailability of the required wireless products. A long period was passed searching for the products, in Japan and abroad. Though a small-scale design with bluetooth device was possible, it does not fulfill the requirement for PET. A home made chip is an alternate option now.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
Research for the targeted wireless PET could not be progressed as it was planned. The main reason was the unavailability of the required wireless products. A long period was passed searching for the products, in Japan and abroad. But the required product is only available for big companies, not for research purpose. Though a small-scale design with bluetooth device was possible, it does not fulfill the requirement for PET. A home made chip is an alternate option now. But it would take more budget and collaboration with some other research lab or industry expertise in developing semiconductor chips.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
It is true that the design and practical implementation of the developed new RF coil is taking big portion of research time from last year, along with other responsibilities. Also, the budget for developing completely new wireless chip is not enough to proceed further. At this stage, I would not pursue further for the wireless technology as I planned at the beginning. Rather, it is better for me to give a good finishing of the new coil and its related design matters for using with PET detector electronics. I am expecting another patent with some new study that I am doing using this grant.

Causes of Carryover |
Research on wireless PET development did not go well. Because of unavailability of the required products. For this reason, there remains some money from the last year, 2017. Some of the left-over fund will be used for further research and some will be used for publication and conference attendance purposes, this year 2018. Since the actual research plan is tough to implement at this stage, I think I should not waste money for developing some small-scale design, that will not have any practical implementation. Rather, I will perform some new study related to the PET for MRI. In future I will try for large grant to develop customized wireless chip for PET. I am sorry that I could not succeed to develop the wireless system. But I tried my best to use the grant for other related progressive researches. The grant helped me to do a patent and I am preparing for another patent now. Thanks.
