最終年度の研究実績として、本プロジェクトにおける北極海の現場観測で取得したデータを論文にまとめ、
国内外の学会等で幅広く成果発表を行った。国際学会では、アメリカ地学学会（AGU）、ヨーロッパ地学学会（EGU）、日本海洋学会、国立極地研究所主催の研究集会などで発表を行った。論文はAGU系の国際誌（J. Geophysical Research Oceans）にて改訂中であり、近日中の受理を目指している。
特に、2020年夏に実施した北極海・北極点付近の海氷・海洋境界層に関する調査の結果として、地球温暖化と海氷減少問題に関係する重要な知見を新たに得ることができた。ここで得た知見とは、主に、夏の間に海氷が融解してできる表層の”淡水層”が熱・塩分・運動量などの輸送過程に果たす役割についてである。まず、海氷の融解した淡水層が、冬季に進みにつれて海氷の再形成を後押しするオフセットとなる効果である。これは、結氷温度が海水の塩分に依存することによる効果である。次に、淡水層が作り出す密度成層によって、風や氷の動きに励起される重力波のエネルギーが集中的に捕捉されるという現象である。内部波のエネルギーはその後、海洋の中・深層に向けてエネルギーを伝搬するため、乱流混合による北極海内部の海水の特性に影響を与える可能性が考えられる。
最後に、本プロジェクトで得た海氷・海洋境界層内の熱・塩分バランスに関する知見を応用して、
極域海洋を対象とした新たな自動観測システムの開発に着手する段階にある。
