Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In Mushima Island, Ojika-machi, Nagasaki Prefecture, the two study sites that were established in 2017 October was monitored for the second year. None of the stations that were setup at both sites had visible sargassum juveniles. At these sites, phosphorus fertilization had no visible effect.
This year, the water temperature did not fall below 14 degrees C during the winter. But, the water temperature did not exceed 27 degrees C during the summer. The winter minimum water temperature remained the similar to last season, but the summer maximum water temperature was lower.
Indoor experiments revealed the effect of predators on grazing of sea urchins. Sea urchins minimize feeding interaction when a predation event occurred, revealing that predators can have a indirect effect on grazing.
